Health Professionals

Standard DNA Paternity or Maternity testing usually involves testing mouth swab samples from the mother, possible father and children in a contested relationship. These samples are collected at sampling apppointments at GP surgeries. However there are occasions where this is not the norm - notably when one of the parties whose DNA requires analysis is deceased.

  • If it is not possible to collect a mouth swab sample our preferred option is a blood sample taken prior to or within 24hrs of death. The sample, approx. 1ml is sufficient, should be stored in a plastic EDTA tube.
  • If this is not available and the deceased died over 24hrs ago we ask for a deep thigh muscle sample to enable us to carry out the analysis. The sample needs to be the size of a 20 pence piece and (one) 1cm thick - it is important that this is taken before embalming.
